  1. On January 1, 1943, Josh Gibson went
  2. into a day-long coma, meaning he
  3. became unconscious. A coma is
  4. usually the result of illness or an
  5. accident, and Josh had been having
  6. dizzy spells. Josh was told by doctors
  7. that he had a brain tumor and needed
  8. an operation. Josh refused surgery.
  9. That season, he won another batting
  10. title. Then, from 1944 to 1946, he led
  11. the Negro leagues in home runs. On
  12. January 20, 1947, Josh told his mother
  13. that this was the night he would die.
  14. She told him to go to bed, and then
  15. called a doctor. That night Josh had a
  16. stroke and died. He was only 35 years
  17. old.
