- On January 1, 1943, Josh Gibson went
- into a day-long coma, meaning he
- became unconscious. A coma is
- usually the result of illness or an
- accident, and Josh had been having
- dizzy spells. Josh was told by doctors
- that he had a brain tumor and needed
- an operation. Josh refused surgery.
- That season, he won another batting
- title. Then, from 1944 to 1946, he led
- the Negro leagues in home runs. On
- January 20, 1947, Josh told his mother
- that this was the night he would die.
- She told him to go to bed, and then
- called a doctor. That night Josh had a
- stroke and died. He was only 35 years
- old.
